Kalidasa & Bhasa: Two icons & two iconic plays

About the Course –

Kalidas and Bhasa are two icons of Sanskrit literature and drama. Even today, they continue to attract stage performers with their unique style of crafting plays.

We desire to introduce the literary gems of these two Dramatists to the connoisseurs through our new course on “Kalidasa and Bhasa: Two icons and two iconic plays.”

We have curated two of their plays, namely अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम् and कर्णभारम् for this course. The course will not follow the traditional lecture method. Dr. Prasad Bhide , the resource person for the course, is active in reviving Classical Sanskrit Plays in contemporary form. He will enact and present some scenes of the plays and simultaneously do the play’s critical appreciation.

Dr. Gauri Moghe, the Executive Editor of the “Cultural Index of Mahabharata” at Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, will provide insight into the original Shakuntala Upakhyana in the Mahabharata, and its distinctness from Kalidasa’s magnum opus.

The course aims to analyze these plays from the point of view of performance. Besides the literary features of the play, various elements involved in the play’s staging will also be discussed and demonstrated.

18 Parvans of Mahabharata : Introduction to an incredible epic

About Course –

The grand epic of Mahabharata is one of the foundational heritages of India. The institute’s work on the Mahabharata is a vital aspect of our legacy.

The “Critical Edition of Mahabharata” published by the Bhandarkar Institute was a monumental project that lasted for 48 years – from 1919 to 1966. After a rigorous examination of around 800 manuscripts from various eras, the 19 volumes of the critical edition were published. Since 1986, the institute has been working on the “Cultural Index of Mahabharata”, which catalogs people, places, and objects mentioned in the epic.

On this backdrop, we are delighted to launch the first-ever online course on Mahabharata that introduces the epic through the exposition of the 18 Parvans (books) of the Mahabharata. We have completed five batches of this course.
